    BIRTH: Year of birth is calculated from age 55 on deposition in Ipswich Quarterly Court, May 1660 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:200 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Thomas Low seems to have come from co. Suffolk where he married and 3 of his children were baptized.
    MAR #1: Polstead par reg (FHL #919627).
    MAR #2: No mar rec found. A wife Susanna is mentioned in his will, below. She is apparently the Susanna Stone who married (1) Richard Cutting and (2) Henry Kimball. See David L. Greene, "Susanna, Wife of Henry Kimballand Thomas Low," TAG, 53(1977):245-46; David L. Greene, "Susanna (Stone)(Cutting) (Kimball) Low Addendum," TAG, 55(1979):26-27 (FHL #973 D25aga). The adm of estate of widow Susannah Low, 7 Oct 1684, was granted to her children, John Kimball and "widow" Straite, apparently Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Straite of Watertown. These are proved children of Henry Kimball and his wife Susannah (Stone) (Cutting). Hence, Susannah's 3rd husband was Thomas Low, whom she married after 1648 when Henry Kimball died (David Pulsifer, ed, "Records of the County of Middlesex," 4 vols. [transcript, 1851] 4:128 [FHL #892250]).

[Salem, MA, 1916-20], 3:175-76 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). Date of birth is calculated from age 23 on Ipswich Quarterly Court rec, May 1660 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:200 [FHL #974.45 P2e]).
    MAR: No mar rec found. The will of Sarah's father, above, mentions his dau Sarah and granddaughter Sarah Safford. This granddaughter is a proved dau of John Safford. Essex deeds clearly show that the wife of John Safford was Sarah (Essex Co. Deeds, 32:161 [FHL #866028]). Hence, Sarah Low, dau of Thomas Low, married John Safford.
    DEATH: No death rec found. Sarah was living as late as 21 May 1712 when she acknowledged her deed to Michael Farley of 16 Jun 1708 (Essex Co. Deeds, 25:142 [FHL #866025]).

Record calls wife "Elizabeth Safford of Ipswich," but there is evidence that this was a clerical error for Rebecca Safford, Elizabeth's sister. Newbury vital records show that Nathan's wife was Rebecca as early as 1692 when their first child was born. Rebecca's age at death suggests a birth year consistent with Rebecca Safford's age. Finally, Elizabeth Safford married Alexander Lovell at Ipswich, 20 July 1697 (VITAL RECORDS OF IPSWICH, 2 vols. [Salem, MA, 1910], 2:384 [FHL #974.45/I2 V2c]).

Mehitable is placed in this family beacuse there is no other Safford family in this area into which she could belong. Moreover, Thomas Safford, son of John Safford, sold land in Ipswich to John Hovey, Mehitable's husband, on 16 Jun 1708 (Essex Co. Deeds, 27:39 [FHL #866025]). Date and place of birth are approximations.
