Fales, Oct 1976, and recorded in undated letter to Clifford L. Stott). This inscription is incorrectly given as 1 Jun 1845 in Vermont Vital Records, 1st series, -1870 (FHL #027633). Also see the adm of estate of David Moore of Sharon, below, which gives death date as 1 Jan 1845. Place of birth is suggested by guardianship, above, and 1774 Rhode Island Census, which includes David Moore in Richmond (John R. Bartlett, ed, CENSUS OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE COLONY OF RHODE ISLAND...1774 [Baltimore, 1969], 200 [FHL #974.5 X2p,200]). It is also significant that David Moore, Sr, had a land interest in Sharon. Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are from his Revolutionary War pension file, National Archives, #W1458 (FHL #971761). David is identified in the will his father, David Moore of Exeter, RI, 7 Nov 1804, proved 2 Jan 1806, Exeter Probate, 7:98 (FHL #932355).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. David had a son David born in 1772. See guardianship, 28 Feb 1787, Windsor Co. Probate (Hartford District), 1:4, paginated from back of vol. (FHL #029160). David Moore's, Jr, gravestone inscription shows that he was aged 72 at death on 1 Jan 1845; hence, he was born in 1772. This was ten years prior to the first known mar rec of David Moore, Sr, suggesting an earlier wife. She was probably a Mosher. Eber Mosher of Sharon, Vermont was guardian of David Moore (b. 1772). Eber previously lived in Richmond, RI. Eber's wife, a distant cousin, was Ede Mosher. It is likely that David Moore (b. 1752) was 1st married to a sister of Eber Mosher or a sister of Eber's wife Ede, also surnamed Mosher. See Mildred (Mosher) Chamberlain and Laura (McGaffey) Clarenbach, DESCENDANTS OF HUGH MOSHER (Madison, WI, 1990), 33-34, 49-50 (FHL #929.273 M853cm).

  1. 8.  Moore, David was born on 13 Sep 1721 in Westerly,Washington,RI (son of Moore, John and Easton, Mercy); died on 5 Dec 1805 in Exeter,Washington,RI.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Westerly Town Records, 2:118 (FHL #930813).
MAR: Charlestown Town Council Records, 1:62 (FHL #931554). Wife is called "Mary James." Although she is not designated a widow on mar rec, it is clear that she was 1st married to Thomas James, by whom she had 2 children. David Moore gave bond on 3 Apr 1749 for the adm of "all the estate that came into his hands of Thomas James deceased by reason of his marrying the relick and administrix of the said Thomas James" (Richmond Town Council & Probate, 1:15, 16, 17 [FHL #930847]). The will of Samuel Barber of Richmond, 27 May 1760, proved 7 Jul 1766, mentions a dau Mary Moore (Richmond Town Council & Probate, 1:428 [FHL #930847]). This Mary Moore was apparently the wife of David Moore and widow of Thomas James. Samuel Barber was a surety for David Moore's adm of Thomas James' estate, 6 Feb 1748/9, and on same date Benjamin Barber, a son of Samuel, was appointed guardian of Jonathan, son of Thomas James.

MAR #1: Coventry town and vital recs, 1:159 (FHL #003861). Mar entry is torn, erradicating the year of mar or Abigail's surname. The mar year is suggested by the birth of 1st child, Ann, in 1745. Abigail is identified in the will of her father, Joseph Baker of Tolland, Conn., n.d., proved 20 Feb 1754, Hartford District Probate, 17:36-37 (FHL #004555).
MAR #2: "Barnstable, Mass. Vital Records," MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT, 25(1923):133 (FHL #974.4 D25md).
DEATH: MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS IN THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION, 17 vols. (Boston, 1896-1908), 6:418 (FHL #974.4 M23m). Samuel was "reported deceased" on muster roll of Capt. John Lamont's Co., Col. Gamaliel Bradford's Regt., enlisted 1 May 1777, but appears on a return as late as 10 May 1778. He was perhaps the Samuel Gilbert who died 6 Aug 1778 in Lt. Ephraim Minot's corps of invalids stationed at Boston (MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS, 6:419).
    OCC: Revolutionary War soldier.
NOTE: That Samuel Gilbert of Colchester, Conn. is identical to Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable, Mass. is shown by a Sharon, Vermont deed in which Daniel Gilbert gave land to Elisha Goodspeed and wife Abigail, 14 Aug 1800 (Sharon Deeds, 4:286 [FHL #028908]). Daniel conveyed the land to the Goodspeeds for "Love and Goodwill," an expression reserved for close relatives. Abigail, wife of Elisha Goodspeed, is a dau of Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable, while Daniel is the son of Samuel Gilbert of Colchester and Bolton, Conn. Samuel Gilbert was called "of Connecticut" on his marriage record at Barnstable, and Samuel of Colchester disappears from the records of Connecticut after 1754. Also see the letter of Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable to Rev. Eleazer Wheelock of Dartmouth College, 16 Aug 1775, concerning his son Samuel, Jr, and the letter from Samuel Gilbert, Jr, to Rev. Wheelock, 17 May 1774 (Wheelock Papers, #774317, #775466.1, Dartmouth College Archives [FHL #1688638]). These letters show that Samuel Gilbert of Barnstable had a son Samuel from a previous marriage.
