    MAR: No mar rec found. Isaac Woods and his wife Mary had four children born at Marlborough, 1683-89 (VITAL RECORDS OF MARLBOROUGH [Worcester,MA, 1908], 206-207 [FHL #974.44/M5 V2s]). She is almost certainly the Mary Bellows who was charged with fornication with Isaac Woods on 29 Sep 1682 (Middlesex Co. Court Files, 1682, fo. 99, #3 [FHL #901003]). Most charges of fornication were brought up when it became obvious that an unmarried woman was with child, or a married woman was pregant beyond the term of her marriage.

    MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of John Bellows and his wife Hannah were born at Marlborough, 1695-1715. Hannah, wife of John Bellows, is identified in the will of her father, Moses Newton of Marlborough ("Southborough" in probate act), 3 Apr 1724, proved 11 Aug 1736, Worcester Co. Probate, 1:196-98 (FHL #856272). She was refered to as deceased in this document. Hannah Bellows died at Marlborough, 11 Dec 1719, aged 46 yrs (VITAL RECORDS OF MARLBOROUGH, 343).
    MAR #2: CONCORD BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS, 1635-1850 (Boston, 1891?), 101 (FHL #974.44/C4 V2c). Some published sources claim that John's 2nd wife was Sarah Johnson who married a John Bellows at Marlborough, 30 Aug 1723 (VITAL RECORDS OF MARLBOROUGH, 221), and that is was John's son John who married Mary Wheeler. See, for instance, Thomas Bellows Peck, THE BELLOWS GENEALOGY (Keene, NH, 1898), 6 (FHL #929.273 B41752p). However, the children of John and Sarah Bellows recorded in Marlborough and Southborough are mentioned in the will of their father, John Bellows of Southborough, 29 Jul 1771, proved 31 Aug 1772, Worcester Co. Probate, 12:146-47 (FHL #856281). This will was too late to belong to John Bellows (b. 1666). Moreover, Mary, wife of Deacon John Bellows, died in Southborough, 7 Mar 1740/1. The John Bellows who died in 1750 was a deacon. The John Bellows who married Sarah Johnson is no doubt the son of John Bellows (b. 1666).

    NOTE: A son Benjamin, born at Concord on 18 Jan 1676/7, is often given to this family. See Thomas Bellows Peck THE BELLOWS GENEALOGY (Keene, NH,1898), 4 (FHL #929.273 B41752p). The birth rec, however, calls him only the "son of Mary Bellowes," with no mention of his alleged father, John Bellows (CONCORD BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS, 1635-1850 [Boston, 1891?], 20 [FHL #974.44/C4 V2c]). The latter's will also fails to mention him, even though Benjamin was living when the document was written. Moreover, there is only a space of nine months between the births of Nathaniel and Benjamin. It is believed, therefore, that Benjamin is not the son of John and Mary Bellows, but the illegitimate son of Mary, eldest dau of John Bellows, who was then 19 yrs old.

    BIRTH: No birth rec found. Although there is no proof that Abigail is the dau of Isaac and Abigail Lawrence, this was the only Lawrence family found in Norwich church, vital, and land recs. It appears that Abigail was named after her mother. Moreover, Henry Walbridge, Abigail's father-in-law, owned land bordering the property of Isaac Lawrence in 1727. See deed from Henry Walbridge to the heirs of Henry Walbridge, Jr, 4 Oct 1727 (Norwich Deeds, 5:141 [FHL #005026]). Abigail is also referred to as a dau of Isaac and Abigail (Bellows) Lawrence in William Gedney Wallbridge, DESCENDANTS OF HENRY WALLBRIDGE (Litchfield, CT, 1898), 30 (FHL #982238 item 8). Abigail's date and place of birth are approximations based on known residence of family in Groton and chronological considerations.
