MAR #1: No mar rec found. Division of land between Elis (Alice) Daggett and Edward Cottle, 4 Apr 1698, shows that Edward had a wife Esther (Dukes Co. Deeds, 1:24 [FHL #911711]). On 12 Sep 1720 Esther Cottle, singlewoman, dau of Edward Cottle, sold her interest in the land of her grandfather, Joseph Daggett, late of Edgartown, to Thomas Martin (Ibid, 7:225 [FHL #911713]). Hence, Edward Cottle's wife was Esther, dau of Joseph Daggett.

On 10 Nov 1719 Edward Cottle and wife Abigail, with other heirs of Joseph Allen, sold their interest in their father's estate at Dartmouth, Mass. to Benjamin Wilbur (Bristol Co. BIRTH: No birth rec found. James Cottle of Chilmark sold land in Amesbury to Robert Cathcart of Tisbury, which "I hold by virtue of a deed from my brother Edward Cottle," 16 [illeg] 1712 (Dukes Co. Deeds, 2:343 [FHL #911711]). Edward is a proved son of Edward Cottle, Sr. James must have been born during the gap between siblings Edward (b. 1666) and Judith (b. 1670). Amesbury vital recs are incomplete for this period. Edward Cottle, Sr, was living in Amesbury on 5 Oct 1668, when he sold land there to Richard Currier (Essex Co. Deeds, 24:67 [FHL #866024]).

Probate, 2:50 [FHL #911748]). The will of Ann Robinson of Tisbury, 2 Jun 1737-22 Nov 1737, calls Silvanus Cottle her "cousin" (Ibid, 3:80-81 [FHL #911747]). Silvanus is the son of John Cottle, son of Edward Cottle. It is believed, therefore, that Ann Cottle, dau of Edward, married Isaac Robinson. Nephews were often referred to as cousins.

MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Jeane (Jane) administered his estate, below. When the estate was divided among the heirs in Apr 1723, the widow Jane is called the wife of Abner West. The will of Thomas Look of Tisbury, 4 Dec 1725, proved Jan 1725/6, identifies his dau Jane West. Abner West receipted for his portion of the Thomas Look estate on 4 Jun 1726 (Dukes Co. Probate, 2:11-12 [FHL #911747]). Hence, John Cottle married Jane Look, who married 2nd to Abner West.

(Boston, 1911-25; repr Edgartown, MA, 1966), 3:107 (FHL #974.494 H2b). No other Cottle families were on Martha's Vineyard into which he could fit. He was probably born in Plymouth Twp about 1677. Edward Cottle was living at Mannamoiett on 5 Mar 1677/8 when fined for profaning the Sabbath (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1955-61], 5:254 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). This is probably Manomet, a village in Plymouth Twp.

Furthermore, John Hillman, Jr, of Chilmark sold land to Benjamin and Jonathan Hillman, proved sons of John Hillamn, Sr, on 9 Dec 1723. The land bordered the land of John Hillman, Sr (Dukes Co.
