MAR #1: No mar rec found. The will of Katherine Belcher of Braintree, Mass., widow of Gregory Belcher, 3 Sep 1679, proved 20 Jul 1680, mentions her dau Elizabeth Gilbert (Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, [o.s.] 6:328-29 [FHL #584128]). She is probably the wife of Josiah Gilbert, as stated in Homer W. Brainard, Harold Simeon Gilbert, and Clarence Almon Torrey, THE GILBERT FAMILY (New Haven, 1953), 63 (FHL #929.273 G377b). Josiah had a wife Elizabeth who died at Wethersfield, 17 Oct 1682 ("Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1634-1868," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1927; Conn. State Library, Hartford], 117 [FHL #002982]). Moreover, the Gilbert family resided in Braintree near the Belchers before their removal to Westhersfield. MAR #2: Pre-nuptial agreement between Josiah Gilbert and widow Mary Ward, 18 Oct 1681, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:448 (FHL #974.6 P2m). John Ward married Mary Harris, 18 Apr 1664 ("Middletown Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1651-1854, "Barbour Collection [typescript, 1923; Conn. State Library, Hartford], 468 [FHL #002974]). The heirs of Mary Gilbert, deceased, were legatees to the estate of William Harris of Middletown. See distribution of estate of William Harris, 3 Aug 1722, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Manwaring, DIGEST, 2:398.
