- BIRTH: William is shown to be a son of Thomas Symonds of Taunton in Frederick Thomas Colby, ed, THE VISITATION OF THE COUNTY OF DEVON IN THE YEAR 1620, Publications of the Harleian Society, Visitation Series, vol. 6 (London, 1872), 280 (FHL #942 B4h). He is also identified as a brother in the will of Richard Symonds of Coxden, Devon, 14 Jan 1608, proved 26 Oct 1611, P.C.C., 79 Wood (FHL #092047). Richard is identified in the will of his father, Thomas Symonds of Taunton, 13 Oct 1572, proved 10 Jan 1572/3, P.C.C., 1 Peter (FHL #091951). Sir Symonds D'Ewes (1602-1650), grandnephew of William Symonds, wrote in his autobiography that William was a son of Thomas of Taunton and that he was the elder brother of Richard Symonds his grandfather, whose will is cited above. D'Ewes placed the birth of his grandfather about 1550. He is also called "my eldest brother" in the will of Thomas Symonds of London, 30 Nov 1619, proved 6 Sep 1620, P.C.C., 89 Soame (FHL #092081).
