- BIRTH: Although no documentary evidence has been found that John is the son of John Crowe, Sr, it can hardly be doubted. No other Crowe/Crowell family lived in the area old enough to have had a son born in 1633. John, Sr, and John, Jr, both resided in Yarmouth, Mass. John, Jr, was not on the list of males at Yarmouth able to bear arms in 1643, so he must have been born after 1627 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 8:194 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). After the death of his father, he is called "Sr" to distinguish him from his nephew, the son of Yelverton, who was born abt 1640 (age at death). Hence, the birth year of John can be narrowed to 1627-40. John Crowe, Sr, had children born as early as 1617 and as late as 1637. For evidence that the family came from Co. Norfolk, Eng, see John G. MAR: The estate recs of John Crowe, below, identify a wife Mehitable. She is identified as a sister of John Miller of Yarmouth and other known children of Rev. John Miller in the will of widow Susannah White of Charlestown, 25 May 1681, proved 29 Mar 1687, Suffolk Co. Probate, #1537, (o.s.) 11:66-68 (FHL #584130).
