- BIRTH: Sylvester is identified in the will of his grandmother, Alice Baldwin of Aston Clinton, 4 Jun 1622, proved 14 Dec 1626, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, orig wills, 1626 (FHL #088556); also in the will of his uncle Richard Baldwin, of Aston Clinton, 18 Feb 1632, proved 29 Nov 1636, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, reg will, 36:65 (FHL #088503); also in the will of his brother Henry Baldwin, of Guildford, Surrey, 11 Sep 1661, proved 20 Mar 1661/2, P.C.C., 34 Laud (FHL #092273). Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. Wife Sarah is identified in probate recs of Sylvester Baldwin, below. She is sometimes identified as Sarah Bryan or Bryant, but no evidence has been found. For discussion see Charles C. Baldwin, THE BALDWIN GENEALOGY (Cleveland, 1881), 41 (FHL #547101).
DEATH: Sylvester died at sea enroute to New England with his family on the ship "Martin" in 1638. His nuncupative will, 21 Jun 1638-13 Jul 1638 is now lost, but notes and quotations from the document are found in James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 vols. (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore, 1981), 1:105 (FHL #974 D2s). Mention of the will is also found in a deed from Sarah Baldwin "otherwise Astwood," widow of Sylvester, to Edward Baldwin, 1 Oct 1666, transcribed into New Haven Co., Conn. Court recs, 1:3, and copied verbatim in Charles C. Baldwin, THE BALDWIN GENEALOGY (Cleveland, 1881), 84 (FHL #547101). Also see presentation of the will to the General Court, 4 Sep 1638, wherein widow Sarah and son Richard were allowed executors (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 1:235 [FHL #974.4 N2s]).
