- BIRTH: No birth rec found. John Day is identified as the youngest son of Editha, wife of John Maynard of Hartford, in the latter's will, 23 Jan 1657/8, no probate act, Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:137-38 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Editha was previously the wife of Robert Day of Hartford, as shown by his will, 20 May 1648, no probate act, Hartford District Probate (Manwaring, DIGEST,1:6). Hence, John was the son of Robert and Editha Day. Date and place of birth are approximations based on family chronology and known residence of parents in Hartford. John was said to be under 21 yrs old in the will of his uncle, Edward Stebbing of Hartford, 24 Aug 1663-3 Sep 1668, Hartford District Probate, 3:52-54 (FHL #004572). Therefore, John was born after 24 Aug 1642.
MAR #1: No mar rec found, but it seems likely that his first wife was the Mary Day mentioned in the will of his aunt Frances Stebbing of Hartford, 20 May 1670, proved 20 Jan 1673/4, to whom she gave some clothing (Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:238). No other adult Mary Day has been identified (John's sister Mary then being Mary Ely).
MAR #2: No mar rec found. The will of John Day of Hartford, below, identifies a wife Sarah. John Day was an heir to Thomas Butler of Wethersfield in his distribution of estate, 5 July 1690 (Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:543-44). It is believed that John's 2nd wife was a dau of Thomas Butler.
