- BIRTH: No birth rec found. Date of birth is calculated from age 84 on gravestone, below. Evidence that he was born in New England and the identification of his parents is cited in Gerald Faulkner Shepard, comp, THE SHEPARD FAMILIES OF NEW ENGLAND, ed Donald Lines Jacobus, 3 vols. (New Havem, 1973), 3:93-96 (FHL #929.273 Sh47j). Also see land grants in Westfield laid out to John Shepard to satisfy grants made to his "grandfather Hart" and to his father ("Land Grants and Highways From the Early Records of Westfield," typescr, 1896, vol 1, pt. 2, p. 59 [FHL #1508828]). Estate recs of Edmund Hart (John's grandfather) mention debt owed to his estate by William Shepard (Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:148 [FHL #879184]). John may have been born in Conn., as his parents were divorced there when John was about 5 years of age (J. H. Trumbull and Charles J.
