- BIRTH: Richard is called 2nd son in the will of his father, Robert Austin of Adisham, 23 Nov 1544, proved 5 Jan 1544/5, Consistory Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 19:38 (FHL #188842). Date and place of birth are approximations. The Boteler MS, a contemporary document, indicates Richard Austen of Wickham [Wickhambreux] married a daughter of Thomas "Danne" [Denne] of Adisham and had a son Robert, who married Margaret Ady and became mayor of Dover. The ancestral Richard Austen did, in fact, have such a son; hence the origin at Wickhambreux also appears likely (cited in "Wills and Notices of Austen of Kent," MISCELLANEA GENEALOGICA ET HERALDICA, new series, 2[1877]:339 [FHL #942 B2m]). Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. Agnes, "wife of Richard Austen the elder," was buried at Adisham, 28 Mar 1588 (Adisham par reg [FHL #1836197 item 9]). Agnes was apparently the daughter of Thomas Denne (a Denne) of Barham, who mentions the children of Richard Austen in his own will, 3 May 1552, proved 21 Sep 1552, Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 28:25 (FHL #188933). As mentioned above the pedigree in the Boteler MS also indicates Richard Austen married a daughter of Thomas Denne. In addition, the will of Thomas Denne's son, Michael Denne of Ickham, 25 Aug 1594, proved 8 Sep 1594, refers to Valentine Austen of Adisham as a cousin, and makes him overseer of his will (Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury, reg wills, 37:198 [FHL #188850]). Valentine is the son of Richard Austen.
