- BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. John is said to have been a weaver from Chippenham, Wilts (Joshua Coffin, A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF NEWBURY [Boston, 1845], 18, 294 [FHL #6050089]). However, John's children were not chr at Chippenham but in the nearby parish of Bromham.

DEATH: VITAL RECORDS OF NEWBURY, 2 vols. (Salem, 1911), 2:547 (FHL #974.45/N1 V28v). "Old." Also see the will of John Bailey of Newbury, 28 Oct 1651, proved 13 Apr 1652, inv 12 Nov 1651 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:145-46 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). The will mentions a son John in New England, son Robert, an unnamed wife, and unnamed daughters living in England.

NOTE: The family tradition recorded by Coffin is that John Bailey and his son John came to New England in 1635 aboard the "Angel Gabriel," which was shipwrecked in a storm off Pemaquid (now Bristol), Maine. Unwilling to risk the voyage, the wife and other children remained in England. The Essex County court ordered John to bring his family to New England, but in Apr 1649 it was decided that "she utterly refusing to come, [John] shall not be constrained to go over to her, using still what means he may to get her over" (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:166 [FHL #974.45 P2e]).
