- BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John Chater and wife Alice testified in Ipswich Court, 19 Nov 1657, concerning the ownership of a steer. Barbara Isly deposed that John Chater brought the animal to his "father Emery" to be killed (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:56 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). This could be no other than John Emery. Hence, is appears that John Emery had a dau Alice who married John Chater. She was probably born abt 1621/2, possibly at Whiteparish, Wilts, where John Emery and Alice Grantham were married in 1620. Alice is also mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Walter Grantham of West Dean, Wilts, n.d., proved 5 Feb 1622/3, P.C.C., 10 Swann (FHL #092091).
MAR: See discussion, above. The first child of John and Alice Chater was born in Newbury in 1644.
