  1. 8.  Clapp, William was born about 1565 in of Sidbury,Devon,Eng (son of Clapp, Richard and (unknown)); was buried on 1 Mar 1640/1641 in Salcombe Regis,Devon,Eng.

    Notes:

BIRTH: The identification of William as a son of Richard by an unknown 1st wife is based on circumstantial evidence. William's son Roger, who emigrated to New England, is called "cousin" in the will of another New England immigrant, John Clapp of Dorchester, 11 Jul 1655, proved 30 Aug 1655, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (o.s.) 1:111 (FHL #584127). John Clapp is a proved son of Nicholas Clapp. John's will mentions several brothers, nieces, and nephews who are mentioned in the will of Nicholas Clapp of Venn Ottery, Devon, 12 Mar 1631/2, proved 29 Mar 1632, Archdeaconry Court of Exeter. The wills of this court were destroyed in 1942. See transcript in Mary Lovering Holman, THE SCOTT GENEALOGY (Boston, 1919), 227-28 (FHL #929.273 Sco84h). Nicholas and William Clapp are apparently brothers. Nicholas is mentioned in the will of his mother, Christian Clapp of Sidbury, Devon, 25 Jul 1608, proved 12 Aug 1608, Court of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, abstracted in Olive M. Moger, "Transcript of Devonshire Wills," 44 vols. (typescript, n.d.), 9:1210 (FHL #916870). William is not mentiond in the will of Christian Clapp, who is the widow of Richard Clapp. It appears that William is from an earlier, unknown wife of Richard. Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: W. I. Leeson, ed, "Sidmouth Parish Register" (transcript, 1941; Devon & Cornwall Record Society), unpaginated (FHL #916935). William was "of Salcome." The wife is a "daughter of Robert Channon."
BUR: This bur is cited in Mary Lovering Holman, ANCESTRY OF COLONEL JOHN HARRINGTON STEVENS..., 2 vols. (n.p., 1948, 1951), 1:278 (FHL #929.273 St47h). The par reg of Salcombe Regis begins in 1702. BTs begin in 1609, but searches in a typescript of available BTs found no transcript for the year 1640 (FHL #916930 items 5-6). Holman apparently located the original BTs for this year in her searches. Also see the will of William Clapp of Salcombe Regis, n.d., proved 25 Mar 1641, Exeter Wills, cited in Holman, STEVENS ANCESTRY, 1:279. The wills of this court were destroyed in 1942.

See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:32 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Thomas and Ann Ford are probably the parents of the Ann Ford who married Thomas Newberry at Windsor, 12 Mar 1676/7.
DEATH: Northampton Vital Records, 1:137 (FHL #186161). Death is also recorded in "Hampshire Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths" (private ms of John Pynchon), entries for Northampton, p. 158 (FHL #014766). 5. 12.  Pond, Robert was born about 1590 in England; died in (inv) 27 Dec 1637 in Dorchester,Suffolk,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. On 23 Jul 1630 Gov. John Winthrop wrote to his son John in Groton: "Commend me to old Pond, and tell him both his sons are well, and remember their duty to him. He must needs send his son John some more provisions" (John Winthrop, THE HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND, ed James Savage, 2 vols. [Boston, 1825], 1:375 [FHL #974 H2w]). It is possible that the other son, not named, is Robert. John disappeared from New England recs and probably returned to England. Research in Groton and vicinity has identified William Pond and his sons John, William, and Joseph. No son Robert has been found, nor is Robert mentioned in William's will.
MAR: No mar rec found. Mary Pond and William Pond petitioned for the administration of the estate of Robert Pond(?) on 10 May 1648 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 2:246 [FHL #974.4 N2s]). Widow Mary Pond was dismissed from the church at Dorchester and admitted to the Cambridge church as the wife of Edward Shephard. Entry is undated but apparently before 1650/1 (Stephen Pascall Sharples, RECORDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND, [Boston, 1906], 7 [FHL #974.44/C1 V27s]). On 24 Feb 1650/1, Edward Shephard of Cambridge deeded land in Dorchester to John Blackman of Dorchester, "lately belonging to Robert Pond, father-in-law to the said John, deceased" (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 3:72 [FHL #493932]). Hence, Mary married (1) Robert Pond, (2) Edward Shephard, whom she married between 1648 and 1650/1.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the inv of estate of Robert Pond of Dorchester, 27 Dec 1637, Suffolk Co. Probate, #6, (n.s.) 1:417 (FHL #594359).
