MAR: Robert M. Sherman and Ruth Wilder Sherman, comps, VITAL RECORDS OF YARMOUTH, 2 vols. (Warwick, RI, 1975), 1:127 (FHL #974.492/Y1 V2s). The mar is also recorded in Barnstable Vital Records (as "Feb 1677"), 1:416 (FHL #947061). Wife is called "Lidy Crow" on Yarmouth record.
DEATH: No death rec found. Ebenezer is last known to have lived on 30 Dec 1746 when, at the age of 91, he deeded land to his son Moses. The document is cited in Weston A. Goodspeed, HISTORY OF THE GOODSPEED FAMILY, 2 vols. (Chicago, 1907), 1:104 (FHL #928150 item 2). Barnstable Co. deeds were destroyed by fire in 1827. This deed was presumably noted before then, or the original is in private possession. Ebenezer probably died at Barnstable where, according to the terms of the deed, his son Moses was to maintain him until the age of 101.

Roger is identified in the will of his father, Robert Goodspeed of Wingrave, 15 Sep 1658, proved 13 Feb 1660/1, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, orig wills, box 40 (FHL #088565). It is indicated in this will that son Roger was "beyond the seas." Date and place of birth are approximations. Roger had siblings chr at Wingrave. The parish registers of Wingrave are lost for this period, and several years are missing from the BTs. Roger was probably baptized in 1614, one of the years for which no BT has survived.

Roger married Layton, Alice in Dec 1641 in Barnstable,Barnstable,MA. Alice was born about 1620 in England; died in (wp) 4 Sep 1689 in Barnstable,Barnstable,MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Alice is the sister of John Layton or Lawton of Newtown, Long Island. See "Town Records of Newtown, Long Island," NYGBR, 64(1933):28, 31 (FHL #974.7 B2n). John Layton is called "uncle" of Nathaniel Goodspeed of Barnstable, son of Roger and Alice Goodspeed. On 2 Jan 1665/6 Nathaniel Goodspeed demanded the estate of John Layton, late of Newtown, deceased, on behalf of his parents, Roger and Alice Goodspeed of Barnstable, Alice being the "sister and next heir of John Layton" (New York Surrogate's Court, liber 1, fo. 11 [FHL #907920]).

BIRTH: Although no documentary evidence has been found that John is the son of John Crowe, Sr, it can hardly be doubted. No other Crowe/Crowell family lived in the area old enough to have had a son born in 1633. John, Sr, and John, Jr, both resided in Yarmouth, Mass. John, Jr, was not on the list of males at Yarmouth able to bear arms in 1643, so he must have been born after 1627 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 8:194 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). After the death of his father, he is called "Sr" to distinguish him from his nephew, the son of Yelverton, who was born abt 1640 (age at death). Hence, the birth year of John can be narrowed to 1627-40. John Crowe, Sr, had children born as early as 1617 and as late as 1637. For evidence that the family came from Co. Norfolk, Eng, see John G. She is no doubt the Mehitable Crow mentioned as the widow in the settlement of estate of John Crow of Yarmouth, 6 Mar 1688/8, Barnstable Co. Probate, 1:26 (FHL #904598).
