Probate, misc docket, (n.s.) 6:30 (FHL #584128). It is stated that Timothy was born in Liverpool in 1628 in Horace E. Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 54 (FHL #186133 item 2). However, it is more likely that he was born in the nearby village of Much Woolton in the parish of Childwall. It is stated that Richard removed to Much Woolton after his mar in 1624 in THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE REVEREND MAN OF GOD, MR. RICHARD MATHER (Cambridge, MA, 1670; repr, Dorchester, MA, 1850), 50 (FHL #1425681 item 2). This work was published with the sanction of Increase Mather, Timothy's brother, although professedly not written by him. Furthermore, Timothy's nephew, Rev. Cotton Mather, wrote in 1702 that Samuel Mather, Timothy's brother, was born in Much Woolton in 1626. See Cotton Mather, MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA, 2 vols. (London, 1702; repr Hartford, 1853), 2:39 (FHL #1688545).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Adm of estate of Humphrey Atherton of Dorchester was granted to Timothy Mather, "son-in-law," with others, 27 Sep 1661, Suffolk Co., Mass. Probate, #275, (o.s.) 4:31 (FHL #584127).The given name of Timothy's wife is derived from her death rec: "Elizabeth wife of Mr. Timothy Mather," died 15 May 1678 (DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 21st Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1890], 29 [FHL #974.46/D1 V2r]).
MAR #2: DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 24. The wife is called Elizabeth Weeks. She is apparently the widow of William Weeks who died at Dorchester, 13 Dec 1677 (Ibid, 29). She is not the dau of Ammiel Weeks of Dorchester, who was born on 18 Oct 1657 (Ibid, 5), as the Elizabeth Weeks who married Timothy Mather died on 20 Feb 1707/10, aged 79 yrs ("Inscriptions from the Old Burial Ground in Dorchester," NEHGR, 4[1851]:278 [FHL #974 B2ne]).

  1. 8.  Mather, Thomas was born about 1565 in of Lowton,Lancs,Eng (son of Mather, John).

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. The Mathers were said to be an ancient family of Lowton, a village in the parish of Winick. See THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE REVEREND MAN OF GOD, MR. RICHARD MATHER (Cambridge, MA, 1670; repr, Dorchester, MA, 1850), 41 (FHL #1425681 item 2). This work was originally published under the sanction of his grandson Increase Mather, although professedly not written by him. Thomas's birth year is an approximation. It has been published that Thomas is a son of John Mather. See Samuel G. Drake, Pedigree of the Family of Mather," NEHGR, 6(1852):20 (FHL #974 B2ne). Also see Horace E. Mather, LINEAGE OF REV. RICHARD MATHER (Hartford, 1890), 33 (FHL #186133 item 2). The earliest mention of John seems to be in Mrs. Hannah Mather Crocker's "Reminiscences and Traditions of Boston," quoted in "Abstracts of Wills of the Mather Family," NEHGR, 47(1893):340 (FHL #974 B2ne). Mrs. Crocker (1752-1829) is a granddaughter of Rev. Cotton Mather. Research has yet to prove/disprove that John is the father of Thomas.

NOTE: It is probable that Thomas had other children besides Richard. Many children of Thomas Mather were baptized at Warrington and Winwick, but it appears that there were two or more contemporary Thomas Mathers, making it difficult to determine which children belong to which Thomas.
