MAR #3: Ibid, 1:17. Wife is called "widow An Newbery," apparently the widow of Thomas Newberry of Windsor, Conn. Thomas Newberry and Ann Ford were married at Windsor, 12 Mar 1676/1677 ("Windsor Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1637-1850," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1929; Conn. MAR #5: No mar rec found. She is called "Margaret Leonard the wife [of] Joseph Leonard, Senr," on her death rec, 1 Dec 1711 (Springfield Vital Records, 1:99). Jacobus identified her as the widow of John Thompson of Middletown, Conn. and says they were married in 1695 (Jacobus, HALE, HOUSE, 682).
MAR #6: No mar rec found. The estate recs of Joseph Leonard, below, identify his widow Sarah. Joseph was married to Sarah as early as 18 Mar 1715 when she consented to a deed to Joseph's grandson, Samuel Leonard (Hampshire Co. Deeds [Springfield Reg], C:107 [FHL #844487]). She was apparently the widow of Joseph Crane who died at Wethersfield, the widow Sarah "Leonard" delivering an acct of her adm on 7 Jun 1714. She reportedly left the Connecticut Colony by 8 Jun 1714 when Joseph Kilbourn was granted adm of the estate in the Hartford District Probate Court. See abstract in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 2:51-21 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Joseph Crane and Sarah, dau of John Kilbourn, were married at Wethersfield, 12 Dec 1684 ("Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1634-1868," Barbour Collection [typescript, 1927; Conn. Probate, 1:174 (FHL #879184), inv 28 Mar 1676 (Ibid, 1:174), agreement of heirs 10 Jan 1676/7 (Ibid, 1:185), distribution 10 Sep 1714 (Ibid, 2:108), additional distribution 8 Apr 1718 (Ibid, 4:5). John Leonard was killed by the Indians early in 1676. See James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, 4 vols. (Boston, 1860-62; repr Baltimore, 1979), 3:79 (FHL #974 D2s). The same claim is made in Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, HALE, HOUSE AND RELATED FAMILIES (Hartford, 1952), 678 (FHL #929.273 H135j). No documentary evidence has been found, but John's estate was administered on the same date as his dau Sarah Keep, who was killed by the Indians in the Longmeadow attack of 26 Mar 1676. John was probably killed in the same attack.
NOTE: No evidence has been found that John is the brother of James Leonard of Taunton, Mass., although this claim is often made. A royal descent is also claimed for John and James Leonard, which has been disproved. See Donald Lines Jacobus, "The Leonard Family of Taunton," TAG, 10(1933):162-66 (FHL #973 D25aga).
