George married Clapp, Jane about 1627. Jane (daughter of Clapp, William and Channon, Johan) was born about 1597 in Salcombe Regis,Devon,Eng; died on 2 Aug 1668 in Dorchester,Suffolk,MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Clapp, Jane was born about 1597 in Salcombe Regis,Devon,Eng (daughter of Clapp, William and Channon, Johan); died on 2 Aug 1668 in Dorchester,Suffolk,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Jane is identified with her son William Weeks in the will of her father, William Clapp of Salcombe Regis, Devon, n.d., proved 25 Mar 1641, abstracted in Mary Lovering Holman, ANCESTRY OF COLONEL JOHN HARRINGTON STEVENS..., 2 vols. (n.p., 1948, 1951), 1:279 (FHL #929.273 St47h). Jane is also mentioned with her son Thomas Weeks in the will of her brother, William Clapp of Salcombe Regis, 6 Sep 1636, proved [incomplete date] 1636, abstracted in the Oswyn Murray Collection, vol. 6, unpaginated (FHL #916897). Devonshire wills were destroyed in 1942.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. However, the will of Jane's father, above, mentions a grandson William Weeks. The will of her brother William Clapp, above, mentions his sister's child, Thomas Weeks. William and Thomas Weeks are proved sons George and Jane Weeks. Furthermore, Jane's own will, below, mentions her Clapp relatives and was witnessed by Roger Clapp, a son of William Clapp.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. The will of widow Jane "Humphrey," below, mentions her Weeks children proving that she was formerly the wife of George Weeks. Jane was apparently the widow of Jonas Humphrey who died at Dorchester, 9 Mar 1661/2. His will mentions a wife but does not name her(Suffolk Co. Probate, #300, [o.s.] 1:383-84 [FHL #584127]).
DEATH: DORCHESTER BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, 21st Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston, 1890), 27 (FHL #974.46/D1 V2v). Also see the will of widow Jane Humphrey of Dorchester, 29 Jan 1666/7, proved 19 Nov 1668, Suffolk Co. Probate, #490, (o.s.) 6:14, inv 5:108-109 (FHL #584128).

Generation: 4

  1. 10.  Clapp, William was born about 1565 in of Sidbury,Devon,Eng (son of Clapp, Richard and (unknown)); was buried on 1 Mar 1640/1641 in Salcombe Regis,Devon,Eng.

    Notes:

BIRTH: The identification of William as a son of Richard by an unknown 1st wife is based on circumstantial evidence. William's son Roger, who emigrated to New England, is called "cousin" in the will of another New England immigrant, John Clapp of Dorchester, 11 Jul 1655, proved 30 Aug 1655, Suffolk Co. Probate, misc docket, (o.s.) 1:111 (FHL #584127). John Clapp is a proved son of Nicholas Clapp. John's will mentions several brothers, nieces, and nephews who are mentioned in the will of Nicholas Clapp of Venn Ottery, Devon, 12 Mar 1631/2, proved 29 Mar 1632, Archdeaconry Court of Exeter. The wills of this court were destroyed in 1942. See transcript in Mary Lovering Holman, THE SCOTT GENEALOGY (Boston, 1919), 227-28 (FHL #929.273 Sco84h). Nicholas and William Clapp are apparently brothers. Nicholas is mentioned in the will of his mother, Christian Clapp of Sidbury, Devon, 25 Jul 1608, proved 12 Aug 1608, Court of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, abstracted in Olive M. Moger, "Transcript of Devonshire Wills," 44 vols. (typescript, n.d.), 9:1210 (FHL #916870). William is not mentiond in the will of Christian Clapp, who is the widow of Richard Clapp. It appears that William is from an earlier, unknown wife of Richard. Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: W. I. Leeson, ed, "Sidmouth Parish Register" (transcript, 1941; Devon & Cornwall Record Society), unpaginated (FHL #916935). William was "of Salcome." The wife is a "daughter of Robert Channon."
BUR: This bur is cited in Mary Lovering Holman, ANCESTRY OF COLONEL JOHN HARRINGTON STEVENS..., 2 vols. (n.p., 1948, 1951), 1:278 (FHL #929.273 St47h). The par reg of Salcombe Regis begins in 1702. BTs begin in 1609, but searches in a typescript of available BTs found no transcript for the year 1640 (FHL #916930 items 5-6). Holman apparently located the original BTs for this year in her searches. Also see the will of William Clapp of Salcombe Regis, n.d., proved 25 Mar 1641, Exeter Wills, cited in Holman, STEVENS ANCESTRY, 1:279. The wills of this court were destroyed in 1942.
