BIRTH: Place of birth is an approximation. Date of birth is calculated from age 22 on passenger list of the ship "Elizabeth" from London, 1635 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 [Baltimore, 1987], 134 [FHL #973 W2col]). Most of the passengers on the "Elizabeth" were from London and nearby parishes in adjacent counties. John may be the son of James Clough, chr at St. Botolph without Aldgate, London, 20 Apr 1614.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of John Clough and his wife "Jone" were born in Salisbury, 1642-56. The wife's name is often published as Jane, but a deed from John Clough to Henry Wheeler, 12 Apr 1664, clearly shows that his wife was Joanna, i.e. Joan (Old Norfolk Co. Deeds, 3:270 [FHL #873020]).
MAR #2: VITAL RECORDS OF DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1686-1850 (Dover, NH, 1894; repr, Bowie, MD, 1977), 109 (FHL #974.25/D1 V2d). Wife is called "Mathew" [Martha] Silly. See the will of John Clough, below, in which the wife is called Martha. Martha Silly (Cilley) was apparently a widow when she married John Clough. See deed from Martha Silly of Amesbury to dau Elizabeth, wife of John Davis of Amesbury, 21 Nov 1684 (Essex Co. Deeds, 23:54-65 [FHL #866024]). She is called dau of Ralph Blaisdell by the usually reliable Sybil Noyes, Charles Thornton Libby, and Walter Goodwin Davis, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE (Portland, ME, 1928-39; repr Baltimore, 1983), 95 (FHL #974 D2n). No evidence has been found.
