The birth is also recorded in Weston vital records with date of 11 Feb 1712, but this is incorrect, as Thomas Spring, Henry's father, died in 1710. The birth of Henry Bullard, Henry Spring's half brother, was also recorded on this date. It is likely that the two children were confused by the town clerk.

Torrey suggests she may have been Susannah (Stowers), widow of George Wheeler of Newbury and Edwin Goodwin of Salisbury, but no evidence has been found (Clarence Almon Torrey, NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 [Baltimore, 1985], 311 [FHL #974 V2t]).

The wife of John Spring of Watertown, "sometimes the wife of Thomas Hatch of Scituate," had been living in Scituate without her husband for 3 or 4 years, when the Plymouth Colony court ordered her to repair to her husband or show cause, 6 Oct 1659 (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, eds, RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF NEW PLYMOUTH, 12 vols. [Boston, 1855-61], 3:174 [FHL #974.4 N2n]). This wife was apparently the Lydia Spring mentioned in the nuncupative will of Jonas Pickles of Scituate, 15 Dec 1664 (Plymouth Colony Probate, 2:2:30 [FHL #567794]). John Spring evidently had no wife on 25 Mar 1656, when he deeded his house and lands to son Henry in exchange for perpetual support, as he made no provisions for her (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 1:220-23 [FHL #554000]). Therefore, John Spring married Lydia, widow of Thomas Hatch of Scituate, later in 1656.

BIRTH: Year of birth is calculated from age 44 on death rec, below. She is believed by some to be Margaret Dix, the servant of Percival Green, who sailed with fellow servant, John Traine, on the "Susan and Ellen" in 1635 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660[Baltimore, 1987], 137-38 [FHL #973 W2col]). Margaret Dix was 18 years old in 1635. Although the age of Margaret Dix is identical to John Traine's wife Margaret, and John Traine was obviously acquainted with Margaret Dix, there is no proof that she married John Traine. MAR: No mar rec found. In a deed from Joshua Stubbs to Joseph Underwood, 8 Nov 1654, Joshua notes the consent of his wife Abigail and "my mother" Abigail Benjamin, apparently his mother-in-law. Abigail Benjamin was the widow of John Benjamin of Watertown (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 2:273-75 [FHL #554000]). Hence, it appears that Joshua Stubbs married Abigail, dau of John and Abigail Benjamin.
DEATH: No death rec found. Joshua was living in Charlestown, 8 Nov 1654, when the above deed was written, but was apparently dead by 31 Jul 1655, when Abigail Stubbs, wife of Joshua, received the first payment from Underwood.

Joshua Stubbs of Charlestown, "with the consent of my mother[-in-law] Abigall Benjamen and of my wife Abigal Stubs," sold land to John Underwood, 8 Nov 1654 (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 2:273-75 [FHL #554000]). Abigal Benjamin was the widow of John Benjamin of Watertown, as shown by a deed of exchange between Abigail Benjamin and Thomas Merritt, et al, 14 Nov 1659 (Ibid, 2:83). Hence, Abigail, wife of Joshua Stubbs, is believed to be the dau of John and Abigail Benjamin. Also see the will of Mary Benjamin of Watertown, 16 May 1646, proved 4 Jun 1646, which calls Abigail Stubbs, "sister" (Suffolk Co. Probate, #41, [o.s.] 1:38 [FHL #584127]). The will of Joshua Benjamin, below, also mentions his sister Abigail. Date of birth is calculated from age 47 on deposition in Middlesex Co. Court Papers, fo. 59, pt. 1 (FHL #901001).

MAR #2: No mar rec found. John and Abigail Woodward had children born in Charlestown as early as 1659 and probably earlier. The will of John Woodward of Watertown, below, mentions his wife Abigail and daughters-in-law [stepdaughters] Mary Traine and Elizabeth Stimpson. Mary and Elizabeth are daughters of Joshua and Abigail Stubbs. Mary Stubbs married John Traine in Watertown, 24 Mar 1674, and Elizabeth Stubbs married Jonathan Stimpson at Cambridge, 8 Jul 1669. The will of Joshua Benjamin of Charlestown, 5 Apr 1684, proved 27 Jan 1684/5, also mentions his sister Abigail "Woodward" (Middlesex Co. Probate Files, 1st series, #1574 [FHL #386018]). Final payment for the sale of land from Joshua Stubbs to John Underwood was made to "Goody Woodward...which was the wife of Joshua Stubbs" (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 2:273-75 [FHL #554000]). Hence, Abigail, widow of Joshua Stubbs, became the wife of John Woodward probaby about 1656.
