Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Mayo, Elizabeth was born about 1637 in England (daughter of Mayo, John); died on 16 Mar 1700/1701 in Yarmouth,Barnstable,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Elizabeth's existence is suggested by the fact that Joseph Howes was a party to the settlement of estate of Rev. John Mayo of Yarmouth, 15 Jun 1676. He was also coadministrator of the estate with John Mayo, son of Rev. John (Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:1:175[FHL #567794]). The will of Joseph Howes of Yarmouth, 17 Jan 1694/5, proved 7 Feb 1694/5 mentions a wife Elizabeth. The will also makes John Mayo overseer (Barnstable Co. Probate, 1:108-109 [FHL #904598]). Although it is not proved, the evidence strongly suggests that Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Howes, is a dau of Rev. John Mayo. Date and place of birth are approximations.
    MAR: See above discussion.
DEATH: Robert M. Sherman and Ruth Wilder Sherman, comps, VITAL RECORDS OF YARMOUTH, 2 vols. (Warwick, RI, 1975), 1:130 (FHL #974.492/Y1 V2s). Also see the will of Elizabeth Howes of Yarmouth, 7 Feb 1694/5, proved 1 Apr 1701, inv 26 Mar 1701, Barnstable Co. Probate, 2:121-22 (FHL #904598).

  1. 2.  Mayo, John was born about 1598 in Northamptonshire,Eng; died in (inv) 1 Jun 1676 in Yarmouth,Barnstable,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John was listed as 17 yrs old and a native of Northamptonshire at matriculation, Magdalen Hall, Oxford, 28 Apr 1615 (Joseph Foster, ALUMNI OXONIENSES, series 1, 4 vols. [Oxford, 1891-92], 3:996 [FHL #942.57/O1 J2ox]). He may be the son of John Mayo of Thorpe Mandeville, Nhants. See evidence in Philip T. Nickerson, "More About Rev. John Mayo," NEHGR, 103(1949):41-42 (FHL #974 B2ne).
MAR #1: First wife is unknown, but it is suspected that John was married prior to his marriage to Tamasin. The wording of John Mayo's estate settlement, below, suggests that Tamasin was not the mother of his children. It is likely that she was the widow of William Lumpkin of Yarmouth, whose will, 20 Jul 1668, proved 24 Jun 1671, mentions a wife Tamasin (Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:1:30 (FHL #567794). Moreover, William Lumpkin's dau Tamasin married Samuel, son of Rev. John Mayo.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. A wife Tamasin is mentioned in John's settlement of estate, below. Also see the above discussion.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the settlement of the estate of Rev. John Mayo of Yarmouth, 15 Jun 1676, inv 1 Jun 1676, Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:1:165 (FHL #567794).
    OCC: Puritan minister
