  1. 2.  Walley, Thomas was born about 1617 in England; died on 24 Mar 1677/1678 in Barnstable,Barnstable,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Cotton Mather states that Thomas Walley was about 61 yrs old when he died on 24 Mar 1678/9. Hence, he was born ca 1617 (Cotton Mather, MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA, 2 vols. [London, 1702; repr Hartford, 1853], 1:599 [FHL #1688545]). Thomas's father is sometimes identified as Robert Walley of London. See Frederick Freeman, THE HISTORY OF CAPE COD, 2 vols. (Boston, 1869), 1:290-91 (FHL #974.49 H2f), also Frederick Lewis Weis, THE COLONIAL CLERGY AND THE COLONIAL CHURCHES OF NEW ENGLAND (Lancaster, MA, 1936), 213 (FHL #974 D3wf). Robert Walley of St. Mary's Whitechapel, Middlesex, near London, made a will in 1651 naming a son Thomas. But the parish regs show that Robert Walley's son Thomas was baptized on 11 May 1607, making him ten yrs older than Rev. Thomas Walley of Barnstable, if we are to rely on the age assigned to him by Mather (St. Mary's Whitechapel par reg [FHL #094691]).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. The baptisms of three children of Thomas Walley and his wife Margery are found in the registers St. Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex, 1647-1650 (FHL #094691). Margery may be a sister of George Smith of London, whose will, 10 Jan 1658, proved 11 Feb 1658, calls Rev.Thomas Walley "brother." P.C.C., 287:95 (FHL #092251). It is also possible that Smith married a sister of Thomas Walley.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. A wife Sarah is identified in his will, below. Also see the letter from Thomas Walley to John Cotton, 20 Sep 1675, announcing his recent mar to "Mrs. Clark" (Edmund S. Morgan, THE PURITAN FAMILY, rev edition [Westport, CT, 1980], 55 [FHL #974 H2me]). The original letter is in the Curwin Papers, 3:46, American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Mass.
DEATH: Reg of the Barnstable West Parish Congregational Church, 7 (FHL #022364). Thomas was minister of this church at the time of his death. The month and year are given as Mar 1678, but the day is not legible. A transcription of the entry made before 1869 gives a complete date of 24 Mar 1678 (Frederick Freeman, THE HISTORY OF CAPE COD, [Boston, 1869], 1:290 [FHL #974.49 H2f]. The date is given as 24 Mar 1678/9 in Mather, MAGNALIA, 1:599. The same death date is given in Edmund Calamy, AN ACCOUNT OF THE MINISTERS EJECTED OR SILENCED AFTER THE RESTORATION OF 1660, 2 vols. (London, 1713), 2:32 (FHL #974 F2dce). On 4 Apr 1702 Samuel Sewell remarked in his diary that he passed the "worn" grave marker of Thomas Walley, which recorded a death date of 21 Mar 1677[/8] ("Judge Sewall's Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard Memoranda, 1702," NEHGR, 14[1860]:13 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Simon Bradstreet noted the death in hisdiary on 9 May 1678, proving that the date was 1677/8, not 1678/9 ("Bradsteet's Journal," NEHGR, 9[1855]:49). However, the will of Thomas Walley of Barnstable, 10 Dec 1677, proved 5 Mar 1677/8, suggests that Thomas was dead by 5 Mar 1677/8 (Plymouth Colony Probate, 3:2:115 [FHL #567794]). In light of the church record, the gravestone inscription, and other contemporary accounts, the probate date of Thomas Walley's will must be questioned. The death date of 24 Mar 1677/8 is accepted here. Mather and Calamy clearly advanced the date by one year, probably confused by the Barnstable church rec, which appears to give the death date in new style.
    OCC: Puritan minister

Thomas married Margery about 1639. Margery was born about 1620 in England; died before 20 Sep 1675. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Margery was born about 1620 in England; died before 20 Sep 1675.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR: No mar rec found. Children of Thomas Walley and his wife Marjery were baptized at St. Mary's Whitechapel, Middlesex, 1647-50 (FHL #974.49 H2f). Other children were probably born as early as 1640.
DEATH: No death rec found. Margery was no doubt dead by 20 Sep 1675 when Thomas Walley wrote to John Cotton about his recent mar to Mrs. Clark (Edmund S. Morgan, THE PURITAN FAMILY, rev edition [Westport, CT, 1980], 55 [FHL #974 H2me]). The original letter is in the Curwin Papers, 3:46, American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Mass.
