Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Squire, Ann was christened on 30 Nov 1591 in Charlton Mackrell,Somerset,Eng (daughter of Squire, Henry); died on 20 Dec 1662 in Boston,Suffolk,MA.

    Notes:

CHR: Charleton Mackrell par reg (FHL #1526463 item 34).
MAR #1: Kingweston BTs (FHL #1470920 item 20). Although there is no record of Aquila Purchase in New England, the diary of William Whiteway of Dorchester, Eng states that Aquila Purcess "went for New England" shortly after 26 Feb 1632/3. Whiteway's diary is in the Egerton ms in the British Museum and is quoted in J. Gardner Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE (New York, 1927), 51 (FHL #929.273 Ad17bj).
MAR #2: No mar rec found. "Sarah Purchase Elder Oliver's daughter in law [step-daughter]" was admitted to the Boston 1st Church, 31 May 1646 ("Records of Admissions in the First Church Boston, 1630 to 1687" [transcript, n.d.], 80 [FHL #856694]). Sarah was baptized at Holy Trinity, Dorchester, Dorset, 6 Aug 1626, the dau of Aquila and Ann Purchase. Elder Oliver is Thomas Oliver, a Boston magistrate. The will of Thomas Oliver of Boston, 13 Mar 1652, proved 27 Jan 1657, mentions his wife but does not name her. Nevertheless, it is clear from the terms of the will that the widow was previously married and had grown children, also not named. See "Abstracts of the Earliest Wills on Record in the County of Suffolk, Mass.," NEHGR, 8(1854):351 (FHL #974 B2ne). The death record of widow Ann Oliver, 20 Dec 1662, no doubt belongs to the widow of Thomas Oliver. Hence, it is believed that Ann, wife of Thomas Oliver, was 1st married to a Purchase, apparently Aquila Purchase.
DEATH: BOSTON BIRTHS, BAPTISMS, MARRIAGES, AND DEATHS, 9th Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston, 1883), 86 (FHL #982237).

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Squire, Henry was born about 1563 in Charlton Mackell,Somerset,Eng (son of Squire(?), William); died before 25 Dec 1649 in Kingweston,Somerset,Eng.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Henry is called a "probable" son of William Squire in J. Gardner Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE (New York, 1927), 52 (FHL #929.273 Ad17bj). Bartlett apparently based his conclusion on the fact that no other candidates for Henry's father were found in the parish of Charlton Mackrell where Henry resided. Date of birth is calculated from age "about 16" given on deposition. Place of birth is suggested by William Squire's known residence in Charleton Mackrell in 1545 and 1554 (Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS, 52). Also see the will of John Drue, Jr, of Charleton Mackrell, which was witnessed by William "Squier," Parson, on 22 Jan 1564/5 (SOMERSET WILLS FROM EXETER, Somerset Record Society, 62[1952]:134 [FHL #942.38 B4s]).
DEATH: No death rec found. Henry was dead before 25 Dec 1649, when his dau Margaret and her husband John Shepherd of Braintree, Mass. granted power of attorney to John Adams. Henry Squire was reportedly "late of Kinweston neere Somerton in Somersetshire" (ASPINWALL NOTARIAL RECORDS, 1644-1651, 32nd Report Boston Record Commissioners [Boston, 1903], 267 [FHL #974.461 H2b]).
    OCC: Husbandman, blacksmith

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
DEATH: William was living on 22 Jan 1564/5, when he witnessed the will of John Drue, Jr, of Charlton Mackrell (SOMERSET WILLS FROM EXETER, Somerset Record Society Publications, 62[1952]:134 [FHL #952.38 B4s]). On this document William is called "parson." Other documents show that he was a minister in Charleton Mackrell in 1545 and 1554. The par regs of Charlton Mackrell do not extend far enough back to include the burial of Rev. William Squire, but John Sprynt was inducted to the rectory on 15 Sep 1567, "made vacant by the death of the last incumbent" (J. Gardner Bartlett, HENRY ADAMS OF SOMERSETSHIRE [New York, 1927], 52 [FHL #929.273 Ad17bj]).
