Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Dewey, Hannah was born on 21 Feb 1672 in Westfield,Hampden,MA; was christened on 11 Apr 1680 in 1st Cong'l Church,Westfield,Hampden,MA (daughter of Dewey, Thomas and Hawes, Constant); died before 8 Nov 1733.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Westfield Vital Records, A:10 (FHL #185474).
CHR: Westfield 1st Congregational Church recs (FHL #185468).
    MAR: Westfield Vital Records, A:47.
DEATH: No death rec found. It is stated that Hannah was living as late as 9 Jul 1745 in Adelbert M. Dewey, LIFE OF GEORGE DEWEY (Westfield, MA, 1898), 245 (FHL #824302). However, it is believed that Dewey was mistaken, as an account of the estate of Matthew Noble presented on 9 Jul 1745 shows that Matthew had a widow Anne. While the names Anne and Hannah were often interchanged, the account also shows that the widow was due 20 pounds from an agreement she made with Matthew on 8 Nov 1733. As contracts were not made between married persons, this was almost certainly a pre-nuptial agreement between Matthew and a 2nd wife Anne (Hampshire Co. Probate, 6:265 [FHL #879185]).

  1. 4.  Dewey, Thomas was born about 1613 in England; died on 27 Apr 1648 in Windsor,Hartford,CT; was buried on 27 Apr 1648 in Windsor,Hartford,CT.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Thomas is said to have come from Sandwich, Kent, but evidence is lacking. See Adelbert M. Dewey, LIFE OF GEORGE DEWEY (Westfield, MA, 1898), 216 (FHL #824302).
MAR: "Windsor Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1637-1850," Barbour Collection (typescript, 1929; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 70 (FHL #002983). Wife was Frances Clark, apparently the widow of an unknown Clark. A dau Mary Clark, age 12, is mentioned in the estate recs of Thomas Dewey, below.

  2. 5.  Frances was born about 1614 in England; died on 27 Sep 1690 in Westfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. The wife is called "Frances Clark" on mar to Thomas Dewey, below. The inv of estate of Thomas Dewey of Windsor, 19 May 1648, lists among his children Mary Clarke, age 12, suggesting his wife was previously married to a Clark. See abstract from Hartford District Probate in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:6-7 (FHL #974.6 P2m). It has been stated that she was the widow of Joseph Clark, whose children, Joseph and Mary, were baptized at Windsor 30 Sep 1638. However, Windsor church recs show that Joseph Clark died in 1641, his wife (not named) died on 3 Apr 1639. Joseph Clark, presumably their son, died 2 May 1659, yet the latter was not mentioned with his sister Mary among the heirs of Thomas Dewey. See SOME EARLY RECORDS AND DOCUMENTS OF AND RELATING TO THE TOWN OF WINDSOR, 1639-1703, "The Matthew Grant Record, usually called the Old Church Record" (Hartford, 1930), 77, 79 (FHL #974.62/W1 N2c). Also see "Windsor Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1637-1850, "Barbour Collection (typescript, 1929; Conn. State Library, Hartford), 56 (FHL #002983). Notes:

BIRTH: Richard is identified in the will of his grandfather Richard Hawes, of Princes Risborough, 14 Jun 1590, proved 17 Feb 1594/5, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, orig wills (FHL #1042503). He was apparently of age when the will was made in 1590; therefore, he was born before 1569. As his own will was made in 1665, Richard must have lived to a great age, or his grandfather failed to mention that Richard was a minor.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Richard's wife Maudlin was bur on 18 Jan 1632/3 (W. G. Cruft, ed, "The Bishops' Transcripts of Great Missenden" [typescript, 1923-24], 18 [FHL #088593]).

DEATH: No death/bur rec found. See the will of Richard Hawes of Gt. Missenden, 9 Sep 1665, proved 11 Jan 1665/6, Archdeaconry Court of Buckingham, orig wills (FHL #088571). The will mentions grandchildren Obadiah and Hannah in New England, cousin Elizabeth Hatch in Aldenham, Herts, "my sisters dagter [sic]," cousin Bennett Hawes, son of Bennet Hawes, of Princes Rishborough, and other relatives.
