    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Thomas Day is identified as the eldest son of Editha, wife of John Maynard of Hartford, in the latter's will, 23 Jan 1657/8 (no probate act), Hartford District Probate, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:137-38 (FHL #974.6 P2m). Editha was previously the wife of Robert Day of Hartford, as shown by his will, 20 May 1648, no probate act, Hartford District Probate (Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:6). Hence, John was the son of Robert and Editha Day. Date and place of birth are approximations based on family chronology and known residence of parents in Hartford. 2. 5.  Cooper, Sarah was born about 1642 in Windsor,Hartford,CT (daughter of Cooper, Thomas and Slye, Sarah); died on 21 Nov 1726 in Springfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Sarah is identified as the "eldest sister" of Thomas Cooper, son of the deceased in the petition for distribution of the estate of Thomas Cooper of Springfield, 30 Sep 1679, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:204 (FHL #879184). Date and place of birth are approximations based on family chronology and known residence of Thomas Cooper at Windsor before 27 Jan 1642/3, when he is called "of Windsor" on Springfield land grant (Henry M. Burt, THE FIRST CENTURY OF THE HISTORY OF SPRINGFIELD,THE OFFICIAL RECORDS FROM 1636-1736, 2 vols. [Springfield, MA, 1898-99], 1:154-55 [FHL #974.426/S1 N2b]).

  3. 6.  Merrick, Thomas was born about 1614 in Wales; died on 7 Sep 1704 in Springfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. Although Thomas's birth date is frequently set at 1620, it seems likely that he was older. In a Connecticut court rec, dated 5 Apr 1638, he is mentioned as one of six men chosen to treat with the Indians at "Warranocke" [Westfield area]. It seems unlikely that an 18-year-old would have been chosen for this assignment (J. H. Trumbull and Charles J. Hoadly, eds, THE PUBLIC RECORDS OF THE COLONY OF CONNECTICUT, 15 vols. [Hartford, 1850-90], 1:17 [FHL #974.6 N2c]). Wales is the traditional birthplace of Thomas Merrick, but no documentation has been found. See Thomas B. Warren, "Springfield Families" (typescript, 1935; Conn. Valley Historical Museum, Springfield, Mass.), 457 (FHL #014787). Thomas married Tilley, Elizabeth on 21 Oct 1653 in Springfield,Hampden,MA. Elizabeth (daughter of Tilley, John and Eady) was born about 1632 in Dorchester,Suffolk,MA; died on 21 Aug 1684 in Springfield,Hampden,MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Tilley, Elizabeth was born about 1632 in Dorchester,Suffolk,MA (daughter of Tilley, John and Eady); died on 21 Aug 1684 in Springfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: There is no proof that Elizabeth is the daughter of John and Edith Tilley. However, there is considerable circumstantial evidence. Investigation of all known Tilley families in New England during the period finds no other family into which Elizabeth could fit. Furthermore, after the death of John Tilley in Oct 1636, the widow Edith was granted land in Windsor, where she took up residence. See Windsor Deeds, 1:25, 30, 51, 53, 77, 112 (FHL #006188). Also see Henry R. Stiles, HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR, 2 vols. (Hartford, 1891-92; repr Somersworth, NH, 1976), 1:167 (FHL #974.62/W1 H2s). Windsor is within 20 miles of Springfield. Thomas Merrick, who was once a resident of Connecticut, was, at the time of his marriage, freighting goods from Springfield to Windsor for John Pynchon (Carl Bridenbaugh, ed, THE PYNCHON PAPERS, 2 vols. Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, vols. 60 and 61 [Boston, 1982], 2:23, 200 [BYU #F61.C71]). No other Tilley family was in close proximity to Springfield. Eady, the widow of John Tilley, was capable of bearing children, as she had a dau Abigail by her 2nd husband, Nicholas Camp. The date and place of birth of Elizabeth Tilley are approximations based on family chronology and history. See DORCHESTER TOWN RECORDS, 4th Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston, 1883), 2, 11, 18, 26, 27, 30, 305, 322 (FHL #974.46/D1 N2d). Elizabeth is called the dau of John Tilley in Herbert E. Thayer, "Miscellaneous Genealocial Records" (card index, n.d.), alpabetically arranged, Springfield Public Library (FHL #185395).

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Day, Robert was born about 1604 in Co. Suffolk,Eng(?); died in (inv) 14 Oct 1648 in Hartford,Hartford,CT.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Robert Day, age 30, was a passenger on the ship "Elizabeth" from Ipswich with wife Mary, age 28, on 30 Apr 1634. He was probably born in Co. Suffolk, as most of the other passengers of the "Elizabeth" with known origins were Suffolk people. Ipswich, the port of embarkation, is also in Suffolk. For passenger list, see Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1607-1660 (Baltimore, 1987), 114-15 (FHL #973 W2col).
MAR #1: Wife Mary, age 28, on passenger list of the "Elizabeth," 1634, above.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. Wife Editha is identified in the will of Robert Day, below. Robert's will also charged Edward Stebbing and others to assist his wife. Editha and her four Day children are mentioned in the will of her 2nd husband, John Maynard of Hartford, 23 Jan 1657/8, no probate act, Hartford Probate District, abstracted in Charles W. Manwaring, ed, DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS, 3 vols. (Hartford, 1904-1906), 1:137-38 (FHL #974.6 P2m). The same will made "my brother" Edward Stebbing one of the overseers. Editha is called "my deare sister Holyoke" in the will of Edward Stebbing of Hartford, 24 Aug 1663, proved 3 Sep 1668, Hartford District Probate, 3:52-54 (FHL #004572). The will also mentions "my brother Eleazer Holyoke." Thus, it is clear that Editha Stebbins married (1) Robert Day (2) John Maynard, and (3) Eleazer Holyoke.
DEATH: No death rec found. See the will of Robert Day of Hartford, 20 May 1648, no probate act, inv 14 Oct 1648, Hartford Probate District, abstracted in Manwaring, DIGEST, 1:6.

Robert married Stebbing, Editha about 1637. Editha (daughter of Stebbing, William) was born about 1613 in Braintree,Essex,Eng(?); died on 24 Oct 1688 in Springfield,Hampden,MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Stebbing, Editha was born about 1613 in Braintree,Essex,Eng(?) (daughter of Stebbing, William); died on 24 Oct 1688 in Springfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Editha is a proved sister of Edward Stebbing of Hartford, whose will, 24 Aug 1663, proved 3 Sep 1668, mentions "my deare sister Holyoke" and "my brother Eleazer Holyoke, "Hartford District Probate, 3:52-54 (FHL #004572). Edward Stebbing was baptized at Black Notely, Essex, 24 Feb 1594/5, son of William Stebbing. William disappeared from Black Notley after 1604. A William Stebbing is mentioned in the vestry minutes of the parish of Braintree, which borders Black Notley, on 6 Sep 1619. See F. G. Emmison, EARLY ESSEX TOWN MEETINGS (London, 1970), 3 (FHL #942.67 K2e). Braintree par regs are lost before 1660. It is believed that William Stebbing removed to Braintree after 1604 and had additional children there, including Editha.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. A wife Editha is mentioned in the will of Robert Day of Hartford, 20 May 1648, no probate act, Hartford Probate District, abstracted in Charles W. 3. 10.  Cooper, Thomas was born about 1617 in England; died on 5 Oct 1675 in Springfield,Hampden,MA.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. Thomas was aged 18 yrs on 16 Mar 1634/5 when he embarked on the ship "Christian" from London. He was indentured to Francis Stiles, also on the "Christian," formerly of Co. Bedford but lately of London. Hence, Cooper was probably from the London area. For further discussion, see Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, HALE, HOUSE AND RELATED FAMILIES (Hartford, 1952), 497 (FHL #929.273 H15j). Another theory is that he was baptized on 29 Aug 1619 at Stratford-on-Avon, Warws. For arguments in favor of this theory, see Agnes Thomson Cooper and John Bradley Cooper, BEGINNINGS: THOMAS COOPER OF SPRINGFIELD (Baltimore, 1987), 225 (FHL #929.273 C788c).
MAR: No mar rec found. The widow Sarah Cooper administered the estate of Thomas Cooper of Springfield, 29 Mar 1676, below. The will of Capt. Robert Slye of St. Mary's Co., Maryland, 18 Jan 1670, proved 13 Mar 1670, mentions "nephews" Timothy and Thomas Cooper of Springfield, known children of Thomas and Sarah Cooper (Maryland Provincial Wills, 1:422 [FHL #012841]). Hence, Sarah appears to be the sister of Robert Slye. For additional information, see Clarence A. Torrey, "Cooper-Slye and Cooper-Glover Problems," TAG 23(1946):95-97 (FHL #973 D25aga), and George Ely Russell, "Slye-Cooper-Russell Connections," TAG, 7(1981):92-94.
DEATH: Springfield Vital Records, 1:49 (FHL #185414). Also see the adm of estate of Thomas Cooper of Springfield, 29 Mar 1676, Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:167, settlement 30 Sep 1679 (Ibid, 1:204), petition 28 Sep 1680 (Ibid, 1:210), agreement of heirs 18 Jan 1698 (Ibid, 3:50 [FHL #879184]). Thomas Cooper was killed by the Indians in the attack on Springfield, 5 Oct 1675. Contemporary accounts of his death are found in a letter from John Pynchon to Gov. John Leverett, 8 Oct 1675, "The Pynchon Papers," PUBLICATIONS OF THE COLONIAL SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS, 1(1982):160-62 (BYU #F61.C71); also Samuel G. MAR #1: No mar rec found. Widow Sarah Cooper admministered the estate of Thomas Cooper, 29 Mar 1676 (Hampshire Co. Probate, 1:167 [FHL #879184]). The will of Capt. Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. John was probably born in the area around Dorset, Somerset, or Devon, where the founders of the Dorchester Company of Adventurers were situated. Tilley was employed by the Dorchester Co. in 1623 to oversee the fisheries at Cape Anne.
MAR: No proof has been found that John was the husband of the widow Eady Tilley of Windsor. However, it is known that John Tilley of Dorchester was married and that after his death in 1636 his widow is listed as a land owner in Dorchester town recs. See DORCHESTER TOWN RECORDS, 4th Report Boston Record Commissioners (Boston 1883), 2, 11, 18, 26, 27, 30, 305, 322 (FHL #974.46/D1 N2d). "Mrs. Tillie" is last of record in Dorchester on 2 Jan 1637/8.
