On 22 Aug 1781 John deeded land in Canterbury belonging to his son Seth, who was missing and presumed dead, to Thomas Challis (Rockingham Co. Deeds, 113:352 [FHL #016246]). John was 73 yrs old when the deed was made.

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Amesbury vital records are defective for this period. John is identified in the settlement of estate of his father, Philip Watson-Challis of Amesbury, 27 Sep 1681, where he is mentioned last among the four sons (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 3:418-19 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). He should not be confused with his elder brother John, who was born on 26 Jun 1655. Although no death record has been found for the elder John, his brother William, born 18 May 1663, is called eldest son of Philip Watson-Challis in a deed to John Dole of Newbury, 6 Apr 1688 (Essex Co. Deeds, 21:196 [FHL #866023]). Hence, this John was born after 1663 and probably after 1673, when Thomas was born. Year of birth is approximated at 1677. Like his brothers, John seems to have dropped Watson from his surname.

BIRTH: No birth rec found and no evidence that Sarah is a dau of Thomas Freame. Nevertheless, it can hardly be doubted. The only Freame family in New England was that of Thomas. He lived in Amesbury, where Sarah resided, and Sarah was born during a period in which the vital records of Amesbury are partly missing. Date and place of birth are approximations.

Philp is identified as the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Challis in the will of his grandfather, John Watson of Writtle, Essex, 19 Sep 1618, proved 14 May 1619, P.C.C., 49 Parker (FHL #092077). Philip declared he was abt 52 yrs old in a deposition, 29 Mar 1669 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 4:100 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Philip retained a dual surname throughout his life in New England.
MAR: No mar rec found. Four children of Philip Watson-Challis and his wife Mary are identified as grandchildren in the will of William Sargent of Amesbury, 24 Mar 1670/1, proved 13 Apr 1675 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:438-441 (FHL #974.45 P2p). The first child of Philip and Mary was born in 1653; they probably married abt 1652.

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Mary is identified in the will of her father, William Sargent of Amesbury, 24 Mar 1670/1, proved 13 Apr 1675 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:438-441 (FHL #974.45 P2p). Mary deposed on 12 Mar 1704/5, aged 68 yrs (Essex General Sessions, 3:145, cited in Robert Charles Anderson, THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS, 3 vols. [Boston, 1995], 3:1632 [FHL #974 W2a]). William Sargent lived in Ipswich in 1634 and at Newbury in 1638.

BIRTH: Thomas declared he was aged about 30 yrs in a deposition, 23 Nov 1680 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 8:37 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). He is no doubt the Thomas Freame apprenticed to Grace Smith at Bristol and bound for New England, 23 Feb 1670 (Peter Wilson Coldham, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF EMIGRANTS, 1661-1699 [Baltimore, 1990], 157 [FHL #973 W2col]). However, he is probably not the Thomas Freame baptized at Minsterworth, Gloucs, 4 Nov 1649, as suggested by John B. Threlfall, "Probable English Origin of Thomas Freame of Amesbury," TAG, 55(1979):44-45 (FHL #973 D25aga). It was probably this Thomas whose burial is recorded in Minsterworth par reg, 13 May 1675 (FHL #091533). Nevertheless, it is likely that he did come from Gloucs, where the name is prevalent.
