Dorothy and Hezekiah, two of the children of Samuel and Dorothy Colby, were baptized at Salisbury, 1 Nov 1719, as grandchildren of Henry Ambrose (VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY [Topsfield, MA, 1915], 55 [FHL #845110]). Moreover, Samuel and Dorothy Colby named a son Ambrose Colby in 1700.

BIRTH: No birth rec found. Samuel is identified in the division of estate of his father, Anthony Colby of Salisbury, 9 Apr 1661 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:408-409 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). Chronology suggests that Samuel was born between his brothers John (b. 1633) and Isaac (b. 1640). Anthony Colby was living in Ipswich, Mass. on 27 Jun 1637 when he sued John Hall of Lynn (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:6 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). It is very likely that Samuel was born in Ipswich.

MAR: Ibid, 264. "Last weeke" of Oct. Henry's wife is called Susannah Worcester. Estate recs of Timothy Worcester, late of Salisbury, deceased, show that his widow became the wife of Henry Ambrose (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 2:297 [FHL #974.45 P2p]).
DEATH: No death rec found. Henry died between 27 May 1720, when he deeded land to his son Nathaniel (Essex Co. Deeds, 54:158 [FHL #866038]), and 20 Dec 1724 when Nathaniel refers to his father as deceased in a deed to Sampson Underhill (Ibid, 47:263 [FHL #866035]). Deeds show that Henry lived in Salisbury almost on the New Hampshire-Mass. border. He is sometimes referred to as "of Salisbury alias Hampton."

Anderson bases the identification of Anthony Colby on his relationship to Simon Bradstreet, who was also from Horbling. The alleged royal ancestry of Anthony Colby advanced in James W. Anthony Colby married his widow, and they sold the land to James Pennyman, who sold the land to Stevenson (SUFFOLK DEEDS, 14 vols. [Boston, 1880-1906], 11:176-77 [FHL #974.46 R2s]). Hence, Anthony Colby's wife was 1st married to a Waterman, given name unknown.
MAR #2: No mar rec found. Children of Anthony Colby and wife Susannah were born at Salisbury, 1640-1650/1 (VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY [Topsfield, MA, 1915], 54-55 [FHL #845110]).
MAR #3: No mar rec found. Susannah Whittridge petitioned the court on 28 Mar 1682 to sell part of the estate of her former husband, Anthony Colby, for her necessary support (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 3 vols. [Salem, MA, 1916-20], 1:409 [FHL #974.45 P2p]). The adm of estate of William Whittridge of Ipswich was granted to his son Thomas Whittridge on 19 Dec 1668. The name of the widow is not mentioned (PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 2:143-45). The estate records of widow Susannah Whittridge, below, mention her Colby children and her "son" Thomas Whittridge. Hence, Susannah married 3rd to William Whittridge.
DEATH: Death date of 8 Jul 1689 "or thereabouts" is from Susannah's inv of estate taken 28 Sep 1691 (Essex Co. Probate, [o.s.] 304:400 [FHL #860486]). Also see the division of estate, 1 Nov 1697 (Ibid, 304:473); and another division, 5 Aug 1700 (Ibid, 307:176-77 [FHL #875125]).

[Salem, MA, 1911-75], 5:20 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). Valentine Rowell married Joanna Pinder at Salisbury, 14 Nov 1643 (VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY, 472 [FHL #974.45/S3 V2t]).

NOTE: William may have 1st married a sister of Theophilus Shatswell of Haverhill, who mentioned "my brother" William Sargent and "my kinsman" Philip Challis in his will, 20 Jun 1663-13 Oct 1663 (THE PROBATE RECORDS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 1:424-25). Philip Challis was the son-in-law of William Sargent. Theophilus Shatswell supposedly married Susannah Bosworth, but this is not proved. If this is true, William Sargent probably married a sister of Theophilus Shatswell, possibly Sybil. Theophilus is one of the children of Judith Shatwell, widow of Sibbertoft, Nhants. All of Judith's children are mentioned in the Chancery suit, Curwin v. Smith, 22 Nov 1627 (Chancery Proceedings, Charles I, cc 15, n. 56, quoted verbatim in David A. Macdonald, "A New Look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families," NEHGR, 150[1996]:185-89 [FHL #974 B2ne]). Of the children listed in the suit, only Sybil is not accounted for among the daughters. The name Sybil, however, does not appear among the children of William Sargent.

Ebenezer Ambrose, age 22, released his stepfather, John Severance, from all debts incurred as administrator of the estate of his late father Henry Ambrose, 4 Feb 1664/5 (Old Norfolk Co. Deeds, 2:108 [FHL #873020]). On 8 Apr 1662 John Severance, husband of "hir that was sometimes the wyfe of henry ambross, and now administrator of the estate of said Ambross, deceased," sued Edward Colcord for alienating a parcel of land which had been granted to Henry Ambross by mortgaging the same to Christopher Palmer (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:379 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). The oft-published mar date of 2 Oct 1663 is obviously an error.
DEATH: No death rec found. Susannah signed a petition, 22 Jul 1692, in favor of Mrs. Bradbury who was accused of witchcraft. Most, if not all, of the signers were residents of Salisbury (David W. Hoyt, THE OLD FAMILIES OF SALISBURY AND AMESBURY, 3 vols. [Providence, 1897-1916; repr in 1 vol., Baltimore, 1982], 375 [FHL #974.45 D2h]).
NOTE: Susannah may have been a relative of Ruth (Leet) Dalton, widow of Timothy Dalton. Ruth made bequests to various relatives on 22 Mar 1663/4, which included Abigail Ambrose, dau of the wife of John Severance of Salisbury (William H. Whitmore, "The Dalton and Batcheller Pedigree," NEHGR, 27[1873]:364 [FHL #974 B2ne]).
