Joseph married Gove, Mary on 28 Dec 1682 in Hampton,Rockingham,NH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Sanborn, John was born about 1620 in England (son of Sanborn, (unknown) and Bachiler, Anne); died on 20 Oct 1692 in Hampton,Rockingham,NH.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. John is called grandson in deed a from Stephen Bachiler, 20 Apr 1647 (New Hampshire Province Deeds, 13:221 [FHL #015415]). Stephen Bachiler, his wife Helen, and dau Ann Sandburn, age 30, applied for a license to pass beyond the sea to visit Stephen's sons and daughters in Flushing, Holland in Jun 1631 (Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR, 45[1891]:237 [FHL #974B2ne]). John is apparently the son of widow Ann Sandburn, but John's father is unknown. John's date of birth is calculated from a deposition, dated 7 Sep 1680, in which he declared he was about 60 yrs old (New Hampshire Province Court Papers, 5:243 [FHL #980934]).
MAR #1: No mar rec found. Children of John Sanborn and his wife Mary are recorded in Hampton, 1651-68 (George F. Sanborn, Jr, and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, eds, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 2 vols. [Boston, 1992-98], 1:544-547, 549-51, 553, 561 [FHL #974.26/H3 V2s]). Mary is identified in the estate division of her father, Robert Tuck of Hampton, 11 Apr 1665 (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 9 vols., repr of New Hampshire State Papers Series, vols. 31-39 [Bowie, MD, 1989-90], 1:79-81 [FHL #974.2 P2p]).
MAR #2: Sanborn, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 1:564. The wife is called Margaret "Moulton" in this entry. She was apparently the widow of William Moulton of Hampton, whose will, n.d., proved 11 Oct 1664, mentions his wife Margaret (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1:66-70). The will of Robert Page of Hampton, 9 Sep 1679-11 Nov 1679, identifies his dau Margaret Sanborn, her Moulton children and her son Jonathan Sanborn (Ibid, 1:236-41). Hence, Margaret Page married (1) William Moulton, (2) John Sanborn.
DEATH: Sanborn, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 1:118. Also see the inv of estate of John Sanborn of Hampton, 22 Feb 1692/3 (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 1:374). Several documents refer to John's will, but it is apparently lost.
OCC: Ensign and lieutenant of Hampton Militia Co., selectman of Hampton, and representative to General Court from Hampton.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Sanborn, (unknown) died before 25 Jun 1630 in England.

    Notes:

BIRTH: The identity of this man is unknown, but he had a widow Anne Sandburn living on the Strand near London on 25 Jun 1631, age 30, when she applied for a "License to Pass Beyond the Sea" to visit family in Flushing, Holland with her father Rev. Stephen Bachiler (Q.R. Miscell, 560-22, cited in Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR, 45[1891]:237 [FHL #974 B2ne]).
MAR: License to Pass Beyond the Sea, 25 Jun 1631, above, proves that Ann Bachiler married Sanborn.
DEATH: License to Pass Beyond the Sea, above, shows that Sanborn was dead by 25 Jun 1631.

(unknown) married Bachiler, Anne about 1619. Anne (daughter of Bachiler, Stephen and (Bate?)) was born about 1601 in Wherwell,Hants,Eng; died after 2 Nov 1639 in England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Bachiler, Anne was born about 1601 in Wherwell,Hants,Eng (daughter of Bachiler, Stephen and (Bate?)); died after 2 Nov 1639 in England.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Anne Sandburn, widow, age 30, living on the Strand near London, applied for a "License to Pass Beyond the Sea," 25 Jun 1631, to visit family in Flushing, Holland with her father Stephen Bachiler (Q.R. Miscell, 560-22, cited in Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR, 45[1891]:237 [FHL #974 B2ne]). She was no doubt born in Wherwell, Hants, where her father was minister, 1587-1605. See Stephen Bachiler's biography, Charles E. Batchelder, "Rev. Stephen Bachiler," NEHGR, 45(1892):60-61 (FHL #974 B2ne). The records of this parish are lost before 1634.
MAR #1: The first name of Anne's husband is unknown, but Anne was a widow "Sandburn" in 1631, as shown above.
MAR #2: Strood par reg (FHL #992462 item 2). Anne's sister, Deborah Wing, was also living in Strood. Further evidence that the Anne Sanborn who married Henry Atkinson is ancestral comes from a petition of Henry Atkinson of London, dated 2 Nov 1639, found in Court of Requests (PRO, REQ2/678/64) and quoted in SANBORN SIGNATURES, 4(1988):10-11 (FHL #929.27305 Sa51s). The document shows that Anne is the sister of Samuel Bachiler, "late of Gorcem in Holland, Minister," and Nathaniel Bachiler of Southampton, merchant.
DEATH: No death/bur rec found. As noted above, Anne was living in London on 2 Nov 1639.

    3. Sanborn, William was born about 1624 in England; died on 18 Nov 1692 in Hampton,Rockingham,NH.

  3. 6.  Tuck, Robert was born about 1590 in England; died on 4 Oct 1664 in Hampton,Rockingham,NH.

    Notes:

BIRTH: Date and place of birth are approximations. As Robert's eldest son, Robert, remained in England and lived in Gorleston, Suffolk, it is possible that Robert Tuck, Sr, was also from Gorleston. However, the name Tuck is rare in Gorleston but is seen frequently in Co. Norfolk. Gorleston borders Norfolk, specifically the city of Gt. Yarmouth. It seems likely that Robert came from Norfolk.
MAR: No mar rec found. A wife Joanna is identified in his estate recs, below, and in the baptismal entry of his dau Elizabeth.
DEATH: George F. Sanborn, Jr, and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, eds, VITAL RECORDS OF HAMPTON, 2 vols. (Boston, 1992-98), 1:114 (FHL #974.26/H3 V2s). The baptismal entry of dau Elizabeth also identifies parents as Robert and Joanna Tuck.

Generation: 4

  1. 10.  Bachiler, Stephen was born about 1561 in England; was buried on 31 Oct 1656 in All Hallows Staining,London,Eng.

    Notes:

BIRTH: No birth/chr rec found. His age was 70 yrs on 23 Jun 1631 when he applied for a "license to pass beyond the sea" (Q.R. Miscell, 560-22, cited in Henry F. Waters, "Genealogical Gleanings in England," NEHGR,45[1891]:237 [FHL #974 B2ne]). He was given the age of 71 in 1632 and 76 in 1638 in the journal of John Winthrop, THE HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND, ed James Savage, 2 vols. (Boston, 1825), 1:78, 260 (FHL #974 H2w). Stephen was probably a native of Hampshire, where he spent much of his life and where the surname is common.
MAR #1: No mar rec found. However, children were born to this wife before Stephen's mar to wife #2. She was probably a close relative to Rev. John Bate, Bachiler's successor as vicar of Wherwell, Hants. In 1614 Stephen Bachiler of Wherwell, his son Stephen, and James Bate of Wherwell, clerk, and others were accused of libelling George Wighley. During the hearing, John Bate called Stephen Bachiler, Jr, his cousin, a term frequently used for nephew as well as cousin (Star Chamber proceedings, James I 297/25, cited in Robert Charles Anderson, THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS, 3 vols. [Boston, 1995], 1:63-64 [FHL #974 W2a]). Further evidence that Stephen's first wife was a sister of Rev. John Bate is found in Court of Requests, REQ2/678/64, dated 2 Nov 1639, in which John Bate of Holland, son of Rev. John Bate, became indebted to Samuel Bachiler, a son of Stephen Bachiler, who was also living in Holland (cited in SANBORN SIGNATURES, 4[1988]:10-11 [FHL #929.27305 Sa51s]).
MAR #2: Abbots Ann, Hants par reg (FHL #1041195). Also see mar lic, 25 Feb 1623, calling Stephen Bachiler a minister of Barton Stacey and his bride Christian Weare, widow, of Andover (Arthur J. Willis, comp, HAMPSHIRE MARRIAGE LICENSES, 1607-1640 [London, 1960], 39 [FHL #942.27 K29wi]).
MAR #3: Abbots Ann par reg. The wife is called widow Helena Mason.
MAR #4: No mar rec found. Stephen Bachiler was apparently a widower living in Portsmouth, NH on 3 May 1647, when he wrote to John Winthrop that the plantation of Strawberry Bank (Portsmouth) assigned a widow to care for his family (COLLECTIONS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 4th ser, 37[1865]:109 [FHL #974 B4m]). Stephen was married to Mary, possibly the widow mentioned above, by 9 Apr 1650, when the court ordered the couple to resume living together (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 1:191 [FHL #974.45 P2e]). But this mar must have occurred in 1647 or 1648 because Mary Bachiler was granted a town lot on 14 Feb 1648 by the town of Kittery (YORK DEEDS, 18 vols. [Portland, ME, 1887-1910], 1:1:5 [FHL #974.195 R2m]). Mary was apparently the widow of Robert Beedle of Kittery. On 20 May 1641 Beedle was granted the identical lot in Kittery granted to Mary Bachiler in 1648 (Ibid, 1:2:11). Stephen Bachiler left his fourth wife in New England when he returned to England. She petitioned for divorce on 14 Oct 1656, stating that her husband had gone to England (Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed, RECORDS OF THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS BAY, 5 vols. [Boston, 1853-54], 3:418 [FHL #974 N2s]). Mary had a dau Mary born abt 1650 who claimed to be a dau of Stephen Bachiler on 26 Mar 1673, when she was granted adm of his estate in New England (PROBATE RECORDS OF THE PROVINCE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, 9 vols., repr of New Hampshire State Papers Series, vols. 31-39 [Bowie, MD, 1989-90], 1:141 [FHL #974.2 P2p]). However, it is known that Mary, Stephen's wife, cohabited with George Rogers of Kittery and produced a child about 1651. On 16 Oct 1651 George Rogers and Mary Bachiler, wife of Stephen Bachiler, were presented for adultery and sentenced to be whipped, Mary's sentence was to be carried out after her delivery, at which time she was also to be branded with the letter "A" (PROVINCE AND COURT RECORDS OF MAINE, 6 vols. [Portland, ME, 1928-75], 1:164, 170 [FHL #974.1 P2p]). Given the fact that Mary delivered a child of George Rogers in 1651/2 and that Stephen Bachiler and his wife were not living together in 1650, it appears more likely that Mary is a dau of George Rogers.
